New Student, First Day is an audio-based ESL conversation activity designed to develop listening comprehension, conversational grammar, and appropriate spoken responses for beginning English learners. Students work through a 10-exchange first-day classroom conversation between a teacher and Carlos, a new student. The activity is structured as a continuous conversation, with progress tracked across all ten exchanges.
Each exchange presents a spoken teacher prompt followed by three spoken response choices. Students listen to the options and select the response that is both grammatically correct and appropriate to the conversation. Topics include introductions, home country, family, English-learning experience, language difficulties, hobbies, and classroom goals.
Correct responses advance the conversation, while one incorrect answer restarts the entire dialogue from Exchange 1, encouraging careful listening and mastery through repetition. The activity is well suited for independent listening practice, language-lab work, learning stations, pronunciation modeling, and beginning-level conversation reinforcement.
