Chatting with the Yeti is an interactive ESL conversation game for grades 3-8 that builds students’ ability to recognize grammatically correct, contextually appropriate English responses. Students enter their name and chat with Steve, a humorous yeti character. At each exchange, students choose from four possible responses; one is correct while the others contain realistic grammar, word-form, agreement, tense, or sentence-structure errors.
The activity contains 20 varied conversation scenarios built around age-appropriate school, STEM, media, problem-solving, research, design, and everyday academic topics. The conversations require students to apply grammar within meaningful dialogue rather than answer isolated grammar questions.
A wrong answer restarts the current conversation and increases Steve’s anger level, so students must apply what they learned when they encounter the exchange again. Three mistakes end the run, while completing a conversation unlocks another randomly selected topic. This makes the game useful for independent practice, learning stations, cumulative grammar review, contextual vocabulary reinforcement, and repeated retrieval practice.
