The Vocabacombs — A vocabulary-practice game disguised as a dungeon crawler.
Students navigate a randomly generated 3D maze (think classic dungeon-crawler style), collecting gold and treasure while avoiding wandering skeleton enemies called Spellingtons. Contact with a Spellington triggers a timed word-unscramble challenge instead of combat: students must correctly spell 1–3 scrambled vocabulary words from a definition-style clue before a 60-second timer runs out. Success defeats the enemy and awards loot; failure costs the player health points and repeats the challenge.
Vocabulary source: 672 words pulled directly from the Ohio K-8 ESL vocabulary list, each with a short definition-style clue.
Built-in scaffolding: Difficulty is tied to dungeon depth — Levels 1–3 draw only from K-2 words, Levels 4–6 add grade 3- 5 vocabulary, and Level 7+ opens up the full list, including grade 6- 8 terms. Health and inventory carry forward between levels, so progress (and challenge) builds gradually.
Format: Runs in any browser, no install or login. It is usable on classroom computers, tablets, or phones, with full-screen mode and touch controls. A single session (one dungeon) typically runs 5–15 minutes depending on maze size and player skill.
Best for: Independent practice, vocabulary review stations, or a low-stakes engagement tool for reinforcing spelling and word-meaning recall.
